FRP Hydrogen Piping Replacement
When a pipe was deteriorating at a chemical plant, we were brought in to replace it with a pre-fabricated FRP pipe system.
- INDUSTRY: Chemical Processing
- LOCATION: Eastover, SC
- YEAR: 2024
- Additional information available upon request for job C24-015 / UB51.
FRP PIPING REPLACEMENT:
Universal Blastco was contracted to repair a section of Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) piping at a facility that provides chemical solutions for water intensive industries.
The existing FRP piping system had aged significantly, and the liner had deteriorated over time, requiring a complete overhaul. To address this problem, we undertook the fabrication and installation of new FRP process piping and valves.
Scope of Work:
- Field verification of the piping measurements.
- Pre-fabrication of new flanges, elbows, and piping.
- Installation of the new piping.
- Demolition and disposal of the existing piping and valves.
This pre-fabrication approach minimized the amount of fieldwork required, reducing the installation time and potential disruptions.
PROCESS FOR REPLACING FRP PIPING WITH PRE-FABRICATED PIPE:
- Field verification of deteriorated piping:
- Conducted a thorough field verification to measure the old piping.
- Ensured all measurements were accurate to facilitate a seamless fabrication and installation process.
- Pre-Fabrication of new piping:
- New flanges, elbows, and piping were fabricated in our Delco, NC workshop. We used high-quality FRP materials including Derakane 411 resin, Sherwin Williams Acrolon 218 (top coat), and Owens Corning Advantex ECR glass.
- Ensured all components met the specified standards and dimensions required for the project.
- FRP Piping Installation:
- Transported the pre-fabricated sections to the site.
- Installed the new FRP process piping and valves, ensuring a precise fit and secure connections.
- Conducted rigorous testing to ensure the integrity and functionality of the new system.
CONCLUSION:
This project shows our ability to deliver high-quality, efficient, and durable FRP piping solutions. By leveraging our expertise in FRP fabrication and installation, we ensured a smooth transition from the old system to the new, with minimal disruption to the plant’s operations.
This is a very typical job for Universal Blastco’s FRP division. We also perform this type of work in emergency situations, as planned projects and during maintenance outages.
