The steel floor inside a 275,000 gallon fuel oil tank, used as storage for boilers, was pitted from microbial induced corrosion. Left unaddressed, the corrosion would have continued to deteriorate the floor, leading to significant operational issues and costly repairs. Universal Blastco was contracted to provide a long-lasting solution, offering a tank lining with a life expectancy of 10 to 15 years.
Universal Blastco lined the tank’s interior floor and lined 3 feet up the wall.
Tank Lining Process Overview:
- Surface Preperation:
- Pressure washed and neutralized contaminants
- Abrasive blasting to SSPC-SP5 White Metal Blast Cleaning standards, covering the floor and walls up to 2 feet. Non-coal slag abrasives were used to ensure proper preparation.
- Metal Repairs:
- Some welding repairs were performed by another subcontractor.
- Coating Application:
- Second abrasive blast followed by thorough cleaning
- Applied a Blome Primer 75 as a base coat
- Applied two coats of Blome EC5521 (20-30 mils DFT per coat) applied for maximum durability
- Final inspections included a customer walkdown and visual checks to ensure quality and adherence to specifications
